Dr. Rajan T.D.

On Doctors' Day 2024 Dr Rajan TD was honoured  as one of the 20 inspiring dermatologists of India by Times Now at a glittering function at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi. The award was presented by Gold medallist olympian Dutee Chand and Dr Vandana Bagga, Director, Health & Family Welfare, New Delhi. 

Dr. Rajan T.D. is an alumnus of Mumbai University and practices as a Specialist in Skin & STD at Andheri (Mumbai) since 1991. He had been a Lecturer at K.B.Bhabha Hospital before venturing into private practice. He has been practising in the north-west suburbs of Mumbai and is now busy running two clinics in Andheri.

Skin expert

    • He is an expert in all skin diseases, diseases of hair, nails and sexually transmitted diseases. He is a keen listener and allows his patients to communicate. Most skin diseases require Counselling as they are chronic and sometimes, disfiguring causing tremendous anxiety. Dr. Rajan takes his responsibility very seriously and explains in detail to his patients about how to cope with them even if cure is slow to come.

      The counsellor

      • From early years of his medical career in  government hospitals  he observed that busy doctors are quick to hand over prescriptions even before the patient has explained his case. In dermatology many skin diseases do not have quick solutions and the patient needs to know why. Dr. Rajan lays emphasis on this aspect of his practice and counsels every patient about his skin or sex related condition. He calls it  "Participatory Therapy" wherein the patient participates in his cure!

      The writer

      • Dr. Rajan regularly writes in various websites and periodicals on several social issues as well as those relating to the pharmaceutical industry. He was the Souvenir Editor for Asian Dermatology Congress 2016. He has authored a chapter in the Textbook of Cosmetic Dermatology: A Practical and Evidence-Based Approach and has several publications in numerous websites, newspapers and periodicals. He simplifies complex skin disorders into simple language making it easy for the reader to understand their disease. Currently he edits Lex Derma, the newsletter of Indian Association of Dermatologists Venereologists & Leprologists' Legal Cell.

      The teacher

      • He regularly lectures doctors on skin and sexually transmitted diseases. In addition he advises Pharmaceutical industries on drug development, promotion and marketing strategies. He is a Guest Faculty of many pharmaceutical companies to guide the marketing team on how to get into the physician's mind. He helps in preparation of promotional material for various companies.
      • He was a Lecturer and Honorary professor at some of the best institutions in the city of Mumbai and several of his students are busy general practitioners and dermatologists now. He believes, education of the younger doctors as well as the general public is the key to successful treatment of skin disorders. 

      The social worker

      • His team of doctors have formed Sneh Deep Trust, a registered charitable trust, that runs the Centre for Special Children (CSC) at Nirali | A.M. Naik Charitable Healthcare Facility, near L&T Gate #7, Saki Vihar Road, Powai, Mumbai.  The OPD is on Monday and Thursday from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon. In the first 2 years of its operations it has assisted 250children with various disabilities. Children with visual, speech and hearing as well physical disabilities have been provided appliances like hearing aids, spectacles, magnifying lens systems and physiotherapy with substantial funding from the Trust.

        Unlike other institutions, the staff at CSC are trained to visit  schools and with the help of teachers, identify needy children with disabilities and encourages the parents to ensure regular therapy and rehabilitation. His team conducts seminars for parents with specially challenged children on how to face the situation and to look for the positive faculties of the affected child.         Until the pandemic began, Dr. Rajan was a Hon. Consultant to Larsen & Toubro Ltd, Air India and ONGC. It would surprise many to know that Dr. Rajan TD had been running a skin OPD managed by Larsen & Toubro Ltd. at Andheri for two hours every Tuesday since 1991. He had treated over 60,000 patients free of charge at the Centre over 29 years!

        He is a crusader for the rights of the disabled and is  associated with different charitable institutions which treat physically and mentally disabled children. 

      Derma Legal activist

      Dr. Rajan is a senior member of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists & Leprologists, (IADVL) the prestigious body of skin specialists in the country. He is the Chairman of its National Legal Cell and actively participates in formulating policies to help its members.
